One day I found myself in quite a funk for no apparent reason. Later in the day someone I respected asked me to take a ride and not ask any questions. He drove to the local hospital and we visited several complete strangers, people who, because of things way beyond their control, had real problems. We sat with some of them and chatted briefly. That was a foundational day in my life. It helped me realize how lucky I was. It helped me to focus on the many blessing I had and not so much on what I felt was missing.
There’s a nursing home near where I live today. Every so often I’ll go there and visit. A couple of years ago, on one of these visits I spotted an old guy sitting in a wheelchair in the hallway. I'd never seen him before. He sat there, his eyes empty, staring off into space. I approached him, gave him a hug and sat by his side. We talked for about a half hour. I spoke to him as though he were still a viable human being.
As I was walking past the nurse’s station on my way out of the place, one of the nurses asked me if I was a family member or friend. I told her I wasn’t and that I just liked to visit old folks from time to time. She told me that the guy never had visitors and hadn’t spoken for almost two years.
I m sure the visit did a lot for the guy. I saw life come back into his eyes. He told me a little about his days as a young man and how he had fought bravely in World War II and later raised a family. When I got up to leave there were tears in his eyes. Someone actually took some time and treated him like a man rather than a bothersome old geezer. It was clear to me he enjoyed the visit. I was happy for him, but what it did for me is
so beyond explanation that I won't even try.
